Jabon Sol La Union Laguna

Compañía Jabonera la Unión (Union Soap Company) was founded in 1900 in the city of Torreon in the State of Coahuila, Mexico. Makers of: "Jabon Sol" and "Jabon Indio". The company extracted oil from cotton seeds to use in their soaps.

On the property, the company built a factory, warehouses, offices, housing for managers and for its workers. For many years the company enjoyed much success and popularity.

Mexican Baseball History

Jabonera la Unión (Union Soap Company) is famous for the birth of the Union Laguna baseball team. In 1940 the Jabonera la Unión, became the first to sponsor the Minor League Baseball team: Algodoneros de Unión Laguna, which was named after the company.

Over the years production and sales declined as more housewives made the switch over to powdered soaps. Sometime during the 1980's the company closed down the factory and vacated the property.

The premises was under the watch of security guards until 2010 when security stopped patrolling the property. In time, looters began to take apart the company buildings for anything of value. Trucks carried away iron and the destruction and theft continued until nothing was left but ruins.

Its Legacy

The soap company Jabonera la Unión is but a distant memory lost in time. However, its historical legacy continues today with a newly built Cultural and Sports Complex properly named Complejo Cultural y Deportivo La Jabonera, which now occupies the old property.
